Melt the ICE Hat Cast-On Party & Donation Drive

  • Sister-Arts Studio 721 West Wrightwood Avenue Chicago, IL, 60614 United States (map)

Join us this Monday, February 16th, for a Melt the ICE Hat Cast-On Party & Donation Drive!

Since many in our community will be off work for Presidents’ Day, we will be hosting a pro-immigrant, pro-democracy community gathering and fundraising day. If you haven’t already heard, Needle & Skein, a Minneapolis yarn shop, has started a red hat movement and raised over $400,000 and counting for immigrant aid and support for those directly affected by the recent Minneapolis ICE raids. Check out Ravelry and Needle & Skein’s Instagram for more on the historical roots of this craftivism movement, as well as fundraising updates.

Drop in at Sister-Arts any time between noon and 6pm for:

  • Melt the ICE Hat Cast-On Support: Before arriving, please purchase Needle & Skein’s Melt the ICE hat pattern— there are knit and crochet versions! We have red yarn for sale, and we’ll be here to help you cast on or get pattern help. Please note: this event is for those who already know the basics of knitting. We will not be teaching people to knit or crochet during the event.

  • Postcard-Writing Station - One of the most effective ways we can communicate with our elected officials is via postcard. Knitter and activist Maggie of @maggietinks will be at the shop to share information on how and why to contact elected officials, with materials for you to write and mail your own postcard.

  • Donation Drive - While we knit, we’ll also share links to several organizations working for Immigrant rights and community resources in Chicago and the Midwest. Make a donation to any organization in any amount and you’ll be entered to win a $50 gift certificate to Sister-Arts Studio! Our featured organization will be the Young Center for Immigrant Childrens’ Rights.

No RSVP necessary.
