Let Granny Squares be your Valentine this year!

Granny squares and afghan blocks are classic crochet projects. Take a quick look and you’ll find countless patterns for squares featuring different pictures, stitches, and motifs. In this one-session class, we’ll explore one particularly lovely afghan block: the Valentine-ready Heart Square by designer P. S. I crochet! Starting at the center of the block, we’ll crochet in the round to form a heart shape. Then, we’ll learn to change colors and add the borders that turn our hearts into squares.

Bring scrap yarn to work with, or purchase yarn in the store so you can make more heart blocks at home! On their own, blocks make great coasters, hot pads, and bunting. Sewn together, they can be used to make blankets, pillows, bags, sweaters, and more. They mix and match well with other granny squares and afghan blocks, too. Keep an eye out… we may even offer a few more square classes throughout the year!

This is an Advanced Beginner crochet class. Students should be familiar with chain stitch, single crochet, and double crochet. Students will learn pattern reading, crochet in the round, changing colors, advanced shaping in motifs, and more! While experience making granny squares is not strictly required, this class makes a great follow-up to the Granny Square Workshop.

Pattern: Purchase Heart Square by P.S. I crochet on Ravelry (make sure you download the American version!)

Yarn: Students will need three colors of yarn. The size and type of yarn are up to you, but we do recommend smooth yarn in DK, worsted, or chunky yarn. Feel free to bring scrap yarn from home, but make sure all three colors are the same weight. Want to turn your squares into a bigger project? Come early to class and Maria will advise you on choosing your yarn!

Other Materials: Crochet hook to match the selected yarn, tapestry needle, scissors.
