Design and knit your own, one-of-a-kind Holiday Stocking using Doodle Knits Motifs!

Holiday Doodle Stocking written by Jamie Lomax uses a simple holiday stocking pattern and 34 whimsical holiday motifs to inspire knitters to create their own customizable design. Doodle with Valerie and learn to knit colorwork top-town socks with DK weight yarn on circular needles. Our new DK weight mini-skeins from Leading Men Fiber Arts are perfect for this project. If you can knit and purl and have knit something in the round (like a hat) and are comfortable working with circular and double pointed needles, you can knit this festive holiday stocking!

During the first week, you’ll start knitting the cuff and learn how the Doodle cards work and how to read charts. During the second week, you’ll pick out a Doodle (or two) and start knitting your colorwork. This pattern uses mix-and-match micro charts to allow the knitter to design their own holiday stocking. Modular instructions include flexible options for the upper ribbing, length, and width of the finished stocking. Beginners can stick with just one or two pattern motifs, while more adventurous knitters can add as much colorwork as they want! As you progress, you’ll learn how to add the heel and toe, keep an even tension, and secure floats. Knit with DK yarn and US size 4 needles, these socks are surprisingly beginner-friendly!

How It’s Worked: This pattern is worked in the round, from the top down in circular needles. It begins with a ribbed cuff, then a sections of “doodle” colorwork, then a short row heel, before finishing with similar colorwork along the foot, and a traditional sock toe, closed with a Kitchener stitch graft.

Yarn: Come early to choose from our large selection of Malabrigo Rios, Madelinetosh DK, Leading Men Fibers Dramaturg full skeins and minis, or other machine-washable light worsted or DK weight yarn. You will need one skein of a neutral color and 3-4 mini skeins.

Materials: US 4 × 12” or 16” circulars and US 4 double-pointed needles (dpns), stitch markers, darning needle, sock point protectors.
